When a technology project needs people, the first question is usually "who?" The better first question is "for how long, and who owns it afterwards?" Here is a simple way to decide between a contract consultant and a full-time hire.
When a contract role fits
- The work has a clear end: a migration, an upgrade, a go-live.
- You need a specialist skill your team will not use every day.
- You need someone productive quickly and can define the work well.
- Demand is uncertain and you want to stay flexible.
When a full-time hire fits
- The skill is core to how your business runs, every day.
- Knowledge needs to stay in the company once the project ends.
- The role includes leading or growing a team.
Contract-to-hire: a middle path
Some teams start with a contract and convert the person to full-time once both sides are sure. It works well when the role is new and you are still learning what it needs. Agree on how a conversion would work before the contract starts, not at the end.
Questions to ask before you decide
- Will this skill be needed in 18 months?
- Who maintains what gets built once the project ends?
- How quickly do you need someone productive?
- Is the budget for a project or for headcount?
There is no single right answer. Being honest about these questions up front avoids the most expensive outcome: hiring the right person into the wrong kind of role.
